Causes and treatment of dwarfism

Many parents of children with short stature seek medical help to make their children grow taller. What are the causes of dwarfism? What kind of dwarfism is impossible to grow taller? And how to treat dwarfism correctly?

Dwarfism can be caused by many reasons, except for familial dwarfism, mostly caused by diseases. Common causes include: 1. endocrine diseases, which account for more than 50% of our patients, such as pituitary dwarfism, hypothyroidism, hypoadrenalism, and precocious puberty; 2. chromosomal diseases, such as Turner syndrome, which is caused by the absence of one X chromosome or structural abnormalities in girls, mainly manifesting as short stature and secondary sexual characteristics at puberty; 3. 3. Skeletal disorders such as chondrodysplasia and osteogenesis imperfecta; 4. Intrauterine growth retardation; 5. Chronic malnutrition; 6. Somatic growth retardation, which is often referred to as late growth; 7. Various genetic metabolic diseases, often accompanied by mental retardation.

Among the short stature caused by endocrine diseases, pituitary dwarfism is the most common, which is caused by the pituitary gland secreting growth hormone disorder, manifesting as proportional dwarfism, intellectual positive often accompanied by gonadal dysplasia such as small penis, cryptorchidism and urolithiasis. It can be seen that during abnormal birth, increased intracranial pressure and ischemia and hypoxia of pituitary cells are the main causes of this disease. Therefore, cesarean section should be used for non-cephalic fetuses to prevent the occurrence of this disease.

The treatment of pituitary dwarfism with growth hormone (rhGH) synthesized by recombinant gene technology can increase height by 8cm~16cm (average 12cm) per year, and some patients are close to normal adult height after treatment. The treatment of hypothyroidism with thyroxine preparations and the treatment of precocious puberty with Chinese herbal medicine combined with western medicine (RHGHa) have good efficacy. Recently, many domestic and foreign data also show that growth hormone has a growth-promoting effect on Turner syndrome and chondrodysplasia. In contrast, there are no ideal treatments for some hereditary diseases.

It can be seen that dwarfism is caused by many reasons, and it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive and systematic examination to clarify the cause of the disease, some diseases can be treated, some diseases do not need treatment or cannot be treated at present, such as familial dwarfism and late growth. In addition, a plain film of the left wrist bone should be taken to understand the age of the bone, but whatever the cause of short stature, it cannot be treated after the epiphysis closes.
