Stomach cancer and intestinal cancer are common malignant tumors, especially intestinal cancer, and their incidence has been increasing in recent years due to changes in lifestyle and dietary structure. Chinese medicine has a long history of understanding tumors (including malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract), and the name “cancer” has been recorded in the Yinxu oracle bone inscription as early as in Chinese. How does tumor occur according to Chinese medicine? The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine has a very famous viewpoint: “When the righteousness exists within, the evil cannot dry up; when the evil comes together, its qi must be deficient”. The treatment of gastrointestinal malignant tumors in TCM attaches great importance to helping the righteousness, that is, restoring the “qi” of the human body to normal, which is the fundamental method of treatment. When we talk about “qi”, we have to mention “spleen”. The concept of “spleen” in Chinese medicine is different from that of “spleen” in Western medicine, which includes the functions of various digestive systems, such as the absorption function of the intestine, the functions of various digestive glands such as liver, pancreas and salivary glands. Therefore, Chinese medicine has always regarded the “spleen” as the “essence of the afterlife” and the “source of qi and blood biochemistry”, which means that the material basis of the human body, including the ability to prevent and fight diseases, comes from the “spleen”. Only when the spleen functions normally can the body be replenished with various nutrients and its ability to prevent and fight diseases can be improved. Stomach cancer and intestinal cancer both occur in the digestive system, which will affect the digestive function; surgical treatment, such as partial removal of the stomach, will also affect the digestive function; the toxic side effects of certain chemotherapy drugs will inhibit the secretion of digestive glands or cause nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. Patients with abnormal digestive function will not receive good nutritional supplements, and their organs and functions will be affected. Clinical studies have also found that herbs mainly for strengthening the spleen together with chemotherapy and biotherapy can improve patients’ symptoms and quality of life, reduce the adverse effects caused by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and prolong patients’ survival. Commonly used herbal medicines for strengthening the spleen and benefiting the qi include: astragalus, codonopsis, yam, prunus, poria, atractylodes, lentils, gorgonian, jujube, etc., among which yam and lentils are often found on our dinner table.
