The symptoms of eye discomfort are diverse and, in general, cannot be generalized. Common symptoms of eye discomfort can be broadly classified into two categories: one is irritation, such as redness, pain, dryness, foreign body sensation, photophobia, and tearing of the eyes. The other category is visual abnormalities, such as vision loss, blurred vision, visual distortion, visual field defects, abnormal color vision, etc. In general, eye irritation symptoms, are caused by ocular surface diseases, or lesions of the anterior structures of the eye. Treatment is based on topical medication, with different eye drops and eye ointments depending on the cause. Visual abnormalities are most likely due to internal eye or fundus diseases. Treatment is based on systemic medication, administered orally or intravenously. At different times of the disease, surgical treatment is also chosen if indications for surgery exist. The eye diseases that are mainly treated surgically are: cataract, closed-angle glaucoma, retinal detachment, macular fissure, macular anterior membrane, and vitreous hemorrhage. To sum up, eye discomfort itself is rather diverse. For the treatment of this condition, it is still necessary to do the relevant detailed examination according to the patient’s specific situation to further clarify it, and then according to the personalized treatment formulated by the specialist, in order to have the best results.
