What are the main causes of an enlarged tongue?

The etiology of tongue hypertrophy is complex, ranging from mild cases including tongue trauma and tongue inflammation to severe cases including acquired diseases such as lymphoma of the tongue, amyloidosis, multiple myeloma, tongue cancer, rhabdomyosarcoma and hypertrophy of the tongue in infants and children can be seen in congenital diseases such as Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, mucopolysaccharide storage disease, Down’s syndrome and cretinism.
