Normal liver function with a high viral load generally does not require antiviral therapy. In the vast majority of cases, normal liver function and high viral load indicate that the patient is in the immune tolerance stage, which is characterized by normal liver function, little liver damage and high viral load, at which point antiviral therapy is not required. If the disease history is longer, if there are signs of cirrhosis, or if there is a clear diagnosis of cirrhosis or liver cancer, even if the liver function is normal, antiviral therapy is needed as long as the viral load is higher than the normal test value. For adults in general, younger patients need regular monitoring of liver function and viral load, hepatobiliary and splenic ultrasound, and methemoglobin, usually at least once every six months.
