Nebivolol is a third-generation β-adrenergic receptor antagonist, which can selectively antagonize β1-adrenergic receptors, and its main effect is vasodilation. It is a drug for the treatment of mild and moderate hypertension, and can also be useful for angina pectoris and congestive heart failure. According to studies, Nebivolol can be used for a long period of time with a low chance of resistance.
Nebivolol is able to increase the ejection fraction in patients with heart failure without any significant effect on pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary capillary pressure.
Compared to similar drugs such as bisoprolol, propranolol, and atenolol, nebivolol is more selective, does not undergo bronchial smooth muscle and vascular smooth muscle contraction, and is essentially devoid of endogenous sympathomimetic activity.
