Neonatal pneumonia is usually caused by aspiration of amniotic fluid, meconium, or infection. Pneumonia can be diagnosed by the newborn’s symptoms, physical examination, blood work, and pulmonary imaging. In neonatal pneumonia, wet rales can be heard near the lesion during auscultation, and some dry rales may be present if there is a possibility of aspiration pneumonia. However, auscultation can only be used as a preliminary diagnosis of pneumonia in newborns. For newborns suspected of having pneumonia, further lung imaging should be performed, as lung imaging is the gold standard for the diagnosis of pneumonia. After the diagnosis of pneumonia is confirmed, the disease can be cured with active symptomatic treatment.
