Lumbar disc herniation can be categorized into bulging, protruding, prolapsing and free according to the degree of herniation. Lumbar disc bulging is in a sense an early manifestation of lumbar disc herniation, and the vast majority of patients can be relieved and cured accordingly through conservative treatment. Lumbar disc bulging is the mildest type of lumbar disc herniation. The annulus fibrosus is partially ruptured, but the superficial layer is intact, and the nucleus pulposus is limitedly bulging into the spinal canal but with a smooth surface. A bulging disc is usually asymptomatic or very mild, and can present with low back pain, and in some cases may irritate the spinal nerves and cause pain or numbness in the lower extremities. The vast majority of patients with lumbar bulging discs can be relieved and cured accordingly through conservative treatment. Treatment of lumbar disc bulging: ① bed rest, generally strict bed rest for three weeks, with waist cuffs gradually down to the ground activities; ② oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesic drugs; ③ traction method, pelvic traction is most commonly used; ④ massage, acupuncture, compresses, physiotherapy and so on. For a small number of patients with bulging lumbar discs, after regular conservative treatment is not effective, can be minimally invasive disc surgery or open disc surgery can also be cured.
