The eyes are not only one of the important sensory organs of the human body, but also often outperform words or physical actions in terms of communication and emotion. The poet Yuan Zhen of the Tang Dynasty depicted “the eyes are like a glazed vase, the heart swells with clear waves across the autumn water”, what a beautiful picture. In ancient times, the beauty of single-eyed skin has always been the beauty, and all the beauties in the pictures of ladies in the past generations are single-eyed without exception. However, the standard of eye aesthetics varies from era to era, from culture to culture, and from race to race. With the development of the trend, the aesthetic standard nowadays is big eyes, double eyelids and long eyelashes, which is increasingly close to the Western aesthetic. From an aesthetic point of view, single lids tend to give the impression of small, “unattractive” eyes; from a morphological point of view, in addition to the absence of horizontal folds, single lids have thicker eyelids, are bloated, and are often accompanied by an inner canthus; functionally, they are not as rich in expression of emotion and exposure as heavy lids, so in addition to adding beauty, blepharoplasty is in a sense a good way to improve the appearance of the eyes. This is the main reason why blepharoplasty has been performed. The essential difference between single and double lids is based on their respective anatomic characteristics. The orbicularis muscle is more developed in single lids, the fascia is loose, the lid plate is thin and narrow, and the muscle that opens the eye, the levator muscle and its tendon membrane, is weak and has no connection to the upper lid dermis. As a result, the single lid cannot form a crease when the eyes are open, and it is easy to form a swollen eye. Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that modifies and reorganizes the anatomy of a single lid to create the appearance of a heavy lid based on aesthetics. The principle of blepharoplasty is that the lid or pre-lid levator tendon membrane is attached to the skin at the upper lid crease by various methods so that a curved crease can be formed on the upper lid when the eyes are open. What are the methods of blepharoplasty? Although the anatomy of the eyelid has been studied extensively and in depth, and there are nearly 100 surgical approaches, there have been no major changes. In general, there are two broad types, namely the external incision method and the suture ligation method. The external incision method is a permanent blepharoplasty that involves removing loose skin, orbicularis muscle and fat through an incision and suturing the skin directly to the orbicularis oris muscle or levator aponeurosis under direct vision to form a heavy eyelid. Suture ligation (buried suture method): The suture ligation method is performed by suturing a suture (or polymer suture) directly between the skin and the lid, causing the upper lid skin to adhere to the lid to form a heavy lid. The sutures can be interrupted or continuous. Postoperative care It is recommended that ice be applied postoperatively, that the head be elevated during sleep to reduce edema, and that the incision be kept out of water and wiped with hydrogen peroxide twice daily, followed by antibiotic eye ointment. Exercise should be avoided for one week after surgery and sunglasses are recommended. Sutures are usually removed in 5-7 days, and corneal contact lenses may be worn 3 weeks after surgery.
