Spleen, Earth, Liver, and Wood generally refer to the five basic elements in the five elements of Chinese medicine: Jin, Mu, Shui, Huo, and Earth, which correspond to the five organs of the human body: Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lungs, and Kidneys, with the Spleen corresponding to Earth and the Liver corresponding to Wood.
1. Spleen and earth: earth is used in harvesting. “Harvesting” refers to the sowing and harvesting of crops, and earth has the function of sowing crops, harvesting grains, and growing all things. It is further extended to mean that the earth has the characteristics of growth, carrying, transforming and nourishing. Often a metaphor for the spleen and stomach putrefaction (initial digestion of food, the formation of celiac disease) water and grains, transportation of essence, the function of qi and blood.
2. Liver: wood is said to be straight, “straight” is that the main trunk of the tree grows straight upward, branches zigzagging outward stretch, growth and prosperity, with the wind, so that the wood has the characteristics of the rise, growth, and the strip of the Shu. Where such characteristics of things and phenomena, can be attributed to wood. The liver is wood, and has the characteristic and function of draining and rising.
