What can tumor patients eat? What can’t be eaten? This is one of the issues that tumor patients and their family members are very concerned about. Some patients think that tumor patients with low immunity need to increase nutrition and take “tonic”; some patients think that tumor is related to environmental deterioration and poor diet, so they need to “avoid eating”. I think for tumor patients, we should not make a generalization, but should be different from person to person, from place to place, and from time to time, and we should identify the disease and evidence. The direct invasion of tumor, the damage of surgery, the toxic side effects of radiotherapy and the emotional changes of tumor patients can all affect and damage the digestive function of spleen and stomach, causing nutritional disorders. In addition, poor diet and bitter-cold herbal medicines also tend to impair the function of spleen and stomach. If the spleen and stomach function is diminished or the “stomach qi” is decayed, it will be quite difficult for patients to be treated. Due to the weakness of the spleen and stomach, patients often suffer from loss of appetite, stuffiness and distension, even nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea and abdominal pain. At this time, a large amount of nourishing food should not be given; a taste of meat and grease will not only aggravate the symptoms of the digestive tract, but also have an adverse effect on the condition. Therefore, the principle of “taking care of stomach energy and regulating liver and spleen” is the principle that tumor patients always pay attention to. The products that can strengthen the spleen and dredge the liver, such as yam, gorgonian, barley, white lentil, adzuki bean, jujube, Buddha’s hand, lycopodium, white radish, hawthorn, Fu Ling cake, Shen Qu, chicken’s inner gold, pork belly, lamb belly, mutton, fish maw, etc., can be blended into food and taken for a long time. The ancient people said, “Poisons attack evil, five grains for nourishment, five fruits for help, five animals for benefit, five dishes for enrichment, and the smell combined and served to replenish the essence.” Therefore, the recipes for cancer patients should be diversified, so that the nutrients consumed by each patient are as complete and balanced as possible. On this basis, we can also try to choose some foods that are proven by modern medicine to prevent and cure cancer, because these foods are rich in vitamins A, B, C, E, carotene, carotenoids, trace elements, polysaccharides and fiber. Such as garlic, beets, asparagus, figs, kiwi, rooibos, papaya, water chestnuts, cinnamon, plums, lilies, rhizome, oolong tea, barley, mung beans, black beans, soybeans, fungus, mushrooms, kelp, nori, clams, oysters, squid, squid, sea cucumber, sea jelly, carp and snapper; cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, carrots, etc. can be used at will. If properly prepared and cooked with good color, aroma and taste, it can not only improve the appetite of patients, but also prevent and cure cancer. 1.Tumor patients should avoid foods containing carcinogenic and cancer-promoting substances. Such as moldy food, smoked food, rotten food and pesticide contaminated food. 2. Different tumors should have different dietary focuses. For example, breast cancer patients should avoid high-fat diet; colorectal cancer patients can use high-fiber, high-protein and low-fat diet, etc. 3.Different treatment stages of tumors have different dietary preferences. For example, before and after surgery, diet rich in protein and vitamins should be consumed; during radiotherapy stage, foods such as watermelon, winter melon, adzuki beans and cabbage can be added, which are good for excretion of toxic substances. 4.Take into account the dietary contraindications of other diseases at the same time. For example, if tumor patients are combined with diabetes, they should use high sugar diet carefully; if they are combined with hyperlipidemia, they should use low fat diet. Diet therapy as an auxiliary means of “supporting the righteous and eliminating the evil” is a part of treatment that cannot be ignored. When using anti-cancer treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, in addition to herbal medicines to support the righteousness and to supplement the deficiency, it should be supported by diet and nutrition. Many cereals, animals, fruits, vegetables and other foods have the effect of supporting the righteousness. The polysaccharides contained in Qin food can improve the body’s tolerance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, protect the hematopoietic function of bone marrow, and maintain the immune function of the body so that the decline of white blood cells and platelets in blood can be prevented. It is impossible to continue the anti-tumor treatment if we can’t recover our body well through diet and medicine during the treatment. We should also pay attention to the combination of attack and supplement in the diet: when the function of spleen and stomach is still good, choose some foods that are both nutrients and have anti-tumor effect. Such as shiitake mushroom, silver fungus, black fungus, water chestnut, horsetail, pig’s raspberry, eastern cabbage, fragrant tea cabbage, yellow flowering cabbage, raw coix seed, fenugreek, walnut, purple cabbage, seaweed, rhizome, cichlid mushroom, taro and so on. This also shows from another side that food therapy is not only about eating some highly nutritious food, but also about eating some food that may have inhibiting effect on tumor, so that food nutrition and food therapy are combined. Like drugs, food also has the difference of sex, taste and meridian. Sex includes cold, hot, warm, cool, etc.; taste includes sour, bitter, sweet, pungent and salty. Therefore, we should choose food according to the coldness, heat, deficiency and reality of patients’ condition. We should not think that tumor patients need high nutrition and high energy material, so we can eat and drink at will regardless of the nature and taste of food. Some people advocate that cancer patients should eat turtle, but turtle cools blood and replenishes yin, its nature is cold and hard to digest, so it is more suitable for those patients with yin deficiency and blood heat, but less suitable for those with spleen deficiency and yang deficiency. Therefore, Yu Rencun, a famous expert in Chinese and Western medicine, emphasizes that “food should be given according to the evidence” and should not be eaten indiscriminately. If the heat toxin is abundant, the evil fire is hot, and there is a hot image, you should not just take warm tonic products, such as ginseng, antler, cinnamon, mutton, dog meat, prawns, etc. Instead, you should eat cool foods such as Amaranthus, chestnut, Brassica, lotus root, rutabaga, silver fungus, bamboo shoots, pigeon meat, duck meat, etc., which have the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying; if the spleen and stomach are weak, you should take sweet and warm aromatic sand, wood, poria, yam, Buddha’s hand, hawthorn, pepper, etc. If the spleen and stomach are weak, the spleen and stomach should be awakened and appeased with sweet and warm aromatic sand, mullein, poria, yam, foxglove, neijin, hawthorn and pepper. In case of Yin sores and malignant gangrene, patients whose Yang energy is not enough to dissolve Yin toxins should take foods such as ginseng, astragalus, cinnamon, angelica, cinnamon, mutton, dog meat, hen, pumpkin, etc. to warm the Yang and hold the toxins. Tumor patients often have fever and bleeding symptoms. During radiotherapy, patients also have symptoms of heat toxicity injuring yin such as dry mouth and tongue, while chemotherapy and surgery can also lead to loss of yin and blood and produce internal heat. Therefore, the tumor patients seen in clinical work have more hot symptoms and less cold ones. In terms of diet, sweet, cool and clear should be the main focus, and be careful with pungent and dry, so as not to hurt yin and consume fluid; and pungent and dry things are also easy to cause or aggravate bleeding, which is not conducive to the condition. Patients can eat more watermelon, winter melon, pears, water chestnuts, thatch, silver fungus, lily, lotus root, carrots, pork, duck, pigeon meat, eggs, buttermilk and other foods; roasted fried, fatty, sweet and spicy products, are not selected. It is also not advisable to use more cinnamon, fennel, pepper, nutmeg and other condiments in the meals. It is worth noting that even though the patient has a warming image, it should not be too cold, so as not to damage the stomach qi and affect the patient’s recovery and treatment. 3, dietary pairing and four times taboo Food can be consumed alone, but most of the time it is applied in combination. It is important to note that some foods should not be consumed together. In the ancient medical writings, there are many records, such as persimmon avoiding crab, onion avoiding honey, turtle fish avoiding amaranth, etc. worth our attention. However, there are also some taboos that need to be re-understood based on evidence-based food administration. As the seasons change, people should follow the laws of nature. Spring and summer Yang Qi is strong, should eat less warm dry food, such as dog meat, mutton, etc.. In autumn, when the climate is dry, people should eat less spicy food and more cool fruits. Winter is cold, should eat less cold food, should serve warm food. 4, hair avoidance At present, there is no effective cure for malignant tumor, and some patients are suffering from recurrence and metastasis soon after surgery and radiotherapy. Some patients and their families think that the reason for recurrence and metastasis is careless diet or “taboo” is not strict. In some places, it is said that chicken cannot be eaten, fish, shrimp and seafood are “hairy”, and scaleless fish cannot be eaten. In many ancient prescriptions, according to the different drugs also recorded a lot of corresponding “taboos”, some of them are quite strict. However, in our clinical work, we have not encountered any cases of recurrence or deterioration due to lax “taboos”. Some early stage patients with good results of radical surgery did not have recurrence or metastasis even without dietary “taboos”. This shows that there is no scientific basis for blaming recurrence and metastasis entirely on the laxity of the “diet”. The issue of “taboo” needs to be further studied scientifically. In this regard, oncologist Yu Rencun pointed out that diet has a close relationship with the development of cancer, and proper “taboo” is still needed, but we should oppose the behavior of over-emphasizing “taboo”. The “taboo” for tumor patients should be carried out under the principle of “evidence-based diet” and should not be too strict, nor should the recipes be too narrow. Some people make a fuss about it, so that the patients are at a loss, even tofu, vegetables and so on are afraid to eat, resulting in the deterioration of the patients’ nutritional status, which is very harmful.
