The adrenocorticotropic hormone screening program mainly includes serum and urine free cortisol measurement, plasma and urine aldosterone measurement, urine 17-hydroxy-corticosteroid measurement, and urine 17-ketocorticosteroid measurement. Adrenocorticotropic hormones mainly include glucocorticoids and salocorticoids. Cortisol is a human glucocorticoid hormone, and the indication for the assay is hypercortisolism or cortisol deficiency, whereas aldosterone is an adrenal salocorticoid hormone, which is mainly a sodium-preserving and potassium-excreting hormone, and is mainly used in the diagnosis of hypercortisolism. Urinary 17-hydroxy-corticosteroid assay, on the other hand, is mainly a sum of adrenal glucocorticoid metabolites, while urinary 17-ketocorticosteroid assay is a component of androgen metabolites.
