What Causes Down Syndrome

The causes of Down’s syndrome are related to the age of the couple at the time of pregnancy, heredity, and exposure to some toxic and harmful substances during pregnancy.
1. Age: the incidence of children with Down’s syndrome is related to the age of the parents, some data show that parents older than 40 years old, the incidence of children with Down’s syndrome increased, with age, the quality of women’s egg cells decline, the risk of chromosomal abnormalities increased.
2. Heredity: If you have previously given birth to a child with Down’s syndrome, the incidence of Down’s syndrome in the next birth will increase.
3. Teratogenic substances: Pregnant women exposed to some radiation and viruses (rubella virus, herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, etc.) before or after pregnancy may cause chromosomal mutations in cells, which may lead to chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus.
Pregnant women are advised to undergo regular obstetric examinations during pregnancy and seek prompt medical attention when abnormal problems are detected.
