Where to get rabies vaccine

In general, rabies vaccination is available at local medical institutions such as CDCs, community health service centers, and township health centers. In addition to this, certain emergency or infectious disease hospitals that are qualified to administer rabies vaccine are also available, but not all hospitals are qualified to administer rabies vaccine. It is recommended that you call the relevant medical facility to confirm the availability of rabies vaccine before going for the vaccination. If a person has a wound after being scratched or bitten by an animal, it is best to get a rabies vaccination in addition to cleaning, disinfecting and dressing the wound. This is because rabies virus may be present in the body of both domestic pets and wild animals. Usually, it is recommended that rabies vaccination be given within 24 hours of an animal bite or scratch for better results, but rabies vaccination can also be given after 24 hours, although the results may be slightly less effective. There are currently two courses of rabies vaccine in China, a 5-dose course and a 4-dose course. 5-dose courses require 1 injection on the day of the injury and 1 injection on days 3, 7, 14 and 28, respectively. 4-dose courses require 2 injections on the day of the injury, followed by 1 injection on day 7 and 1 injection on day 21 after the injury. Patients should get the injections on time and in the right amount regardless of the course they choose in order to achieve a relatively good effect of the vaccine and reduce the possibility of viral infection.
