Alopecia areata is the phenomenon of hair loss. Normal hair loss is the hair in the regressive and resting phases. Since the hair entering the regressive phase and the hair newly entering the growth phase are constantly in dynamic balance, a normal amount of hair can be maintained. Pathological hair loss refers to abnormal or excessive hair loss, and has many causes, including hormonal alopecia, neurological alopecia, endocrine alopecia, nutritional alopecia, physical alopecia, chemical alopecia, infectious alopecia, symptomatic alopecia, congenital alopecia, seasonal alopecia, and so on. Seborrheic alopecia is a type of hormonal alopecia, which is extremely common today and is associated with genetics, sex hormones, and seborrhea. Its main symptoms are excessive oil production in the scalp and a greasy feeling in the hair. The clinical manifestations are excessive scalp fat overflow, resulting in a greasy and moist scalp, combined with dust and dander, the hair easily becomes dirty and smells bad, especially when the temperature is high; sometimes accompanied by itchy scalp inflammation, mainly due to scalp humidity, bacterial infection caused by seborrheic dermatitis. In Chinese medicine, seborrheic alopecia is called “column hair ringworm” or “insect-infested alopecia”, which is mainly caused by dampness and heat attacking the skin, couples not solid, veins and veins stasis, or emotions suppressing depression and fire, depleting yin and blood, blood heat generating wind, and unfavorable biochemistry of essence and blood resulting in hair loss due to hair root not solid. The main types of hair loss are spleen and stomach damp-heat – this type of patients are addicted to sweet and fatty food, greasy and shiny hair, hair loss, slow growth of new hair, accompanied by bad breath, sticky and unpleasant stools; and blood-heat and wind-dry type, this type of hair loss can be seen suddenly in patches, or with head baking heat, irritable and restless. In modern medicine, the treatment of hair loss is mainly treated by applying external drugs such as minoxidil or simply taking vitamins, but the effect is not optimistic. In Chinese medicine, the treatment of hair loss should be based on evidence, and different treatments should be taken for different types of evidence, such as nourishing the liver and kidneys for liver and kidney deficiency; benefiting qi and replenishing blood for qi and blood deficiency; draining the liver and dispersing wind to regulate qi and blood for blood deficiency and wind dryness. For seborrheic alopecia, those with damp-heat in the spleen and stomach should be treated by strengthening the spleen and stomach, resolving dampness and regulating qi; those with hot and dry blood should be treated by softening the liver and nourishing the blood, dispelling wind and relieving itch. More than 10 years ago, there was a female patient in our clinic who had very serious hair loss. But she didn’t want her hair loss to get more and more serious. Later, she heard that the hair loss was due to kidney deficiency, so she bought some Chinese medicine to nourish her kidney, but it still didn’t have any effect. The patient had hyperlipidemia and oily hair. For this patient’s condition, we used drugs to regulate qi and dampness, nourish blood and astringent yin, etc. After a few treatments, the patient’s hair loss was completely cured, and not only that, even the hair quality changed, the original oily hair became neutral to dry hair. More than ten years have passed and according to her feedback, she has no more hair loss! She still comes to our clinic from time to time for treatment. Therefore, we should not think that the problem of hair loss is caused by kidney deficiency, we should go through Chinese medicine to identify and classify the symptoms, and then use the right medicine!
