Is hyperthyroidism worse with higher iodine intake?

A higher iodine uptake rate does not necessarily mean that hyperthyroidism is more severe, but needs to be combined with thyroid function tests, thyroid ultrasound and other laboratory tests to accurately determine this. Iodine uptake rate is mainly used for the etiologic examination of hyperthyroidism. When the serum thyroid hormone level of the hyperthyroidism type of thyrotoxicosis increases, the iodine uptake rate will also increase. However, iodine uptake alone cannot accurately determine the severity of hyperthyroidism, but needs to be combined with thyroid function, such as FT3, FT4, TSH, thyroid ultrasound, and specific clinical symptoms. In addition, the iodine uptake rate is the traditional method of diagnosing hyperthyroidism, and the normal value is generally 5~25% in 3 hours and 20~45% in 24 hours, with the peak occurring at 24 hours. Iodine uptake rate in hyperthyroidism is characterized by an increase in total iodine uptake and a shift in peak uptake forward. It is recommended that patients presenting with an increased iodine uptake rate should seek prompt medical attention.
