Frequent lab tests for female hair loss

  Female hair loss is often diffuse and requires detailed examination to make a clear diagnosis and determine the cause, which must be clarified before treatment is taken.  The doctor will usually ask detailed questions about medical history, menstrual history, life status, mental sleep status, eating habits, any other diseases, medication history, family history, etc.; check the distribution of hair all over the body, body posture, etc.  Some laboratory tests will also be performed as needed: blood count, sedimentation, liver function, lipids, ferritin, vitamin B12, folic acid, blood sugar, insulin release test, thyroid function, thyroid-related antibodies, anti-nuclear antibodies, sex hormone level, sex hormone binding globulin, etc.  Hair microscopy (dermoscopy) is also a frequently required test.  In some special cases, histopathological examinations are also performed.  Sometimes patients are also asked to collect all the hair that is shed in a day for hair microscopy.
