What causes portal vein dilatation?

The causes of portal vein dilatation are more complex, including liver disease and abnormal portal vein development.

1. Liver diseases

(1) Liver cirrhosis: hepatitis cirrhosis, alcoholic cirrhosis, cholestatic cirrhosis and other cirrhosis will lead to portal hypertension, resulting in portal vein dilatation.

(2) Hepatocellular carcinoma thromboembolism: Hepatocellular carcinoma thromboembolism causes embolism of portal vein itself or intrahepatic vein, which will result in stagnation of blood flow in portal vein and formation of high-pressure state, resulting in dilatation of portal vein.

2. Abnormal development of portal vein: portal vein aneurysm in congenital fetal umbilical vein-portal vein system development abnormality will lead to congenital lack of elastic fiber and other defects of blood vessels, resulting in portal vein dilatation.

Prompt medical consultation is recommended when portal hypertension occurs, or when the above disorders are suspected.
