Ninety percent of parents of children with short stature do not know that “short stature is a disease”

Why don’t children grow taller even though they are well-nourished? Why can a child be short even if the parents are tall? Is height determined by genetics? Modern medicine has proven in long-term clinical studies that heredity accounts for one-third of the factors that determine height. Short stature is essentially a treatable disease and must be taken seriously by parents. Why are many children’s heights unintentionally delayed by their parents? The survey found that 97% of parents of children with short stature recognized that their child was short, but only 1.6% realized that it could be caused by some disease. The percentage of parents who did not know enough about the disease and lacked basic knowledge (e.g. average height by age, causes of the disease) was 41.9%. The percentage of parents who did not think that short stature is a disease and misunderstood that the child is late growing and will grow taller later was 32.3%. The percentage of those who know that treatment is needed, but the cost of medicine is too high to afford is 29%. 16.1% believe in calcium supplement and height increase advertisements and buy height increase or health care drugs for their children. 12.9% did not pay attention to their children’s height and did not give them regular medical checkups. The percentage of parents who do not know the average height of their children’s age group is 56.9%. Nearly half of the parents interviewed attributed their children’s short height to “late development” and “picky and partial eating”. They took measures such as increasing nutrition, strengthening physical exercise, taking vitamin tablets and using height-enhancing supplements, while more than 20% of parents did not take any measures to deal with their children’s short stature. Most parents do not think it is necessary to take their children to the hospital for tests to determine the cause of their child’s short stature. Shortness is a disease whose main cause is the lack of growth hormone in the body. Genetics only accounts for one-third of the factors that determine height and environmental conditions account for two-thirds. In terms of current medical technology, short stature caused by genetic factors can be treated if interventions are taken at the right time. The first disease that affects height is short stature caused by growth hormone deficiency or insufficient secretion. If this type of disease is not treated early, the child’s final height as an adult may be only about 1.30 meters, i.e., dwarfism. The next diseases are precocious puberty, hypothyroidism, abnormal adrenocortical function, idiopathic dwarfism, as well as children younger than fetal age and abnormal bone development, all of which can cause dwarfism. Dwarfism is not a terrible problem, but should be given attention and concern, regular medical checkups, early detection and early diagnosis. Do not seek medical help blindly, you should go to the pediatrics or developmental pediatrics department of a regular hospital.
