Herpes zoster is caused by the varicella-zoster virus and is known as “snake sores” in Chinese medicine. It is most common in middle-aged and elderly people and is characterized by clusters of dense blisters along one peripheral nerve, accompanied by pronounced neuralgia, often in the form of pins and needles or burning pain. It can appear all over the body, mainly on the waist and abdomen, chest and back, and is especially serious if it occurs on the head and face. If the disease is not treated promptly or properly, it often leaves residual neuralgia (for months, years or even for life) or affects function, and can also lead to complications such as blindness, deafness, facial paralysis, meningoencephalitis, myocarditis or even life-threatening, which seriously affects the quality of life. Our department has participated in many scientific researches on herpes zoster, including the “Research on the advantages of different acupuncture methods in treating herpes zoster”, which is a national “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” science and technology support project, and has now formed an optimized program for the comprehensive treatment of herpes zoster by acupuncture. It is proved that the early use of this program can avoid or reduce the nerve damage to the maximum extent, so as to quickly stop the pain, eliminate the lesions, and prevent the occurrence of post-neuralgia. The program includes: 1. electroacupuncture for rapid pain relief 2. fire acupuncture to promote crusting and pain relief 3. acupuncture point injection to nourish nerves 4. acupuncture point buried thread to consolidate pain relief 5. heavy moxibustion to prolong pain relief and promote lesion repair 6. semiconductor laser irradiation to promote lesion crusting and pain relief Typical cases Before treatment Electroacupuncture during treatment After treatment
