The melanocyte implantation method, called autologous melanocyte transplantation, is generally divided into two types: 1) autologous cultured melanocyte transplantation, and 2) autologous non-cultured melanocyte transplantation. As the name implies, the contents of these two methods are different, the first one transplants melanocytes that are cultured in vitro. The second one does not require culture, but is actually a suspension of the patient’s epidermal cells. But both methods actually transplant the patient’s own melanocytes from the healthy skin to the location where the patient has vitiligo, the melanocytes can then further become viable and produce melanin. This allows the patient’s skin to look more natural, often applying a relatively small amount of donor sites to treat large areas of skin damage, but this technique tends to be more costly.
