It is not recommended to take Longjiao San for asthma, which cannot achieve the therapeutic effect. There are three kinds of Longjiao San, which are used for deficiency labor and loss of essence, pediatric carbuncle and sore throat.
1. There are two kinds of Longjiao San recorded in ancient literature, one is a formula from Sheng Hui, Volume 30, which consists of Longjiao, licorice, dry ginger and gui Xin. It is used in treating loss of semen due to deficiency of kidney qi (i.e., deficiency of kidney qi, inability to hide semen, resulting in loss of semen leakage).
Another type of Long Jiao San is a formula from the “General and Minor Discussions on Pediatric Hygiene” (小儿卫生總微論方), Volume 20, which is composed of Dilong, Licorice, Jingshui Sui (荆芥穗), and Hornbeam. It is used in the early stage of carbuncle boils in children, which are red, swollen and painful, or occur on the head and face, with fever, slight cold, or painful spots.
2. Another version of Long Jiao San is a Japanese medicine, which is composed of Platycodonopsis, Licorice, Polygala, Almonds, etc. It has the effect of expelling phlegm and relieving cough, and is used to relieve sore throat and cough. It is not yet available in China.
To summarize, none of these three versions of Longjiaosan has a clear role in treating asthma. Therefore, people with asthma are not recommended to use Longjiaosan for treatment. Patients with asthma are advised to go to regular hospitals for consultation and treatment under the guidance of professional physicians.
