A large differential pressure is defined as the difference in systolic pressure minus diastolic pressure greater than 60 mm Hg. The most common cause of an increased differential pulse pressure is atherosclerotic disease, seen especially in older patients. Such patients often simply have an increased pulse pressure difference and do not have any uncomfortable symptoms. Patients are primarily treated with a combination of anti-atherosclerotic therapy, for example, patients are advised to take oral aspirin, resulvastatin and other such drugs. In other patients, it may be caused by hyperthyroidism and the patient should combine it with treatment of hyperthyroidism, for example, the patient is advised to take oral methimazole, vitamin B4 and shark liver alcohol. In other patients, the increased pulse pressure difference may also be caused by other problems. It is mainly the treatment of their primary disease that will help to reduce the differential pulse pressure and improve the patient’s prognosis.
