Both Achilles tendon tears and Achilles tendon ruptures usually refer to Achilles tendon injuries, with Achilles tendon ruptures being significantly more severe than Achilles tendon tears. An Achilles tendon tear is a condition in which the Achilles tendon is damaged but the continuity and integrity of the Achilles tendon is not completely disrupted, and can include a partial Achilles tendon tear or injury to some of the fibers of the Achilles tendon. Achilles tendon rupture means that the continuity and integrity of the Achilles tendon is completely disrupted, the distal and proximal ends of the Achilles tendon are not connected, and the proximal end of the torn Achilles tendon will retract toward the proximal calf, which will also cause foot dysfunction, including foot plantarflexion dysfunction and positive skin swelling test.
