A typical manifestation of lumbar disc herniation is low back pain accompanied by radiating pain in the lower extremities. Many people are often worried when they find out they have a lumbar disc herniation after having CT and MRI examinations. In fact, lumbar disc herniation is a common clinical condition and only a few of them require surgery. The need for surgical treatment of lumbar disc herniation is determined by the patient’s condition and imaging examinations. Treatment options cannot be clarified based on CT and MRI examinations alone. Lumbar disc herniation generally requires surgery when one of the following conditions is met: 1. history of more than 6 months, ineffective with conservative treatment, affecting work or life; 2. severe and intense pain affecting movement and sleep; 3. muscle weakness or urinary and fecal incontinence.
