What causes yellowing of the eyes

The yellowing of the eyes mostly refers to the yellowing of the conjunctiva or sclera, which may be caused by physiological factors or pathological factors (hemolytic jaundice, obstructive jaundice) and so on.
1. Physiological factors: the patient’s age, due to the accumulation of metabolic wastes and external environmental stimuli, can lead to conjunctival tissue pigmentation, so it can cause the patient’s conjunctiva yellowing. In addition, long-term consumption of yellow food, such as oranges, pumpkin, etc., the patient may also appear yellowing of the eyes.
2. Pathologic factors
(1) Hemolytic jaundice: if the newborn appears to have yellow eyes and cannot be relieved for a long time, it needs to be considered to be caused by hemolytic jaundice.
(2). Obstructive jaundice: obstructive jaundice will lead to high concentration of bilirubin in the serum, due to the abnormal bilirubin metabolism, excessive bilirubin gathered in the body, yellowing of the sclera, so the patient may also have yellowing of the eyes, which will be accompanied by yellowing of the skin.
It is recommended that patients with obvious yellowing of the eyeballs should consult a doctor promptly to evaluate their condition and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
