What is the condition of low GGT

If a patient has a low GGT in the liver function test, it is recommended that the patient should continue to observe the situation and generally no special treatment is needed. For GGT, the normal value is generally between 11-50U/L. If it is within this range, the patient’s body is considered to be in the normal range. If the patient’s GGT is significantly higher than 50 U/L, fatty liver, hepatitis and liver disease should be ruled out, and the patient may have biliary obstruction, which is caused by stones or tumor diseases of the biliary tract, or tumors of the pancreas that compress the bile ducts and cause biliary stasis in the liver and elevated bilirubin. In this case, patients also have elevated total bilirubin, direct bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase in liver function. In this case, the patient should have an ultrasound of the upper abdomen and an MRI of the upper abdomen, i.e. MRCP water imaging of the biliary tract, which can determine whether the biliary obstruction is caused by stones or by tumor disease. If the obstruction is caused by stone, we should consider to perform stone removal surgery under ERCP; if it is caused by tumor disease, we should consider to perform surgical treatment as soon as possible.
