Is gallstone extraction really that reliable?

Patients often ask about biliary stone retrieval, now the unified reply is as follows: 1, our unit used to use this way to treat gallbladder stones 20-30 years ago, but due to the high recurrence rate of stones 5-20 years after surgery, it is now basically eliminated. 2, the current stage of biliary stone treatment, although there are certain improvements in the method, but still can not avoid recurrence. As for the so-called “increased incidence of colon cancer after cholecystectomy”; “increased incidence of common bile duct stones after cholecystectomy”, etc., no formal evidence-based medical papers have been published, and these views have not been verified. 4, I personally believe that for patients of advanced age/complications who cannot afford cholecystectomy, biliary stone retrieval can be used, and in recent years, the biliary stone retrieval surgery I have used is mainly for this group of people. 5, I have always taken a skeptical attitude towards biliary stone extraction surgery, and do not recommend blindly expanding the scope of biliary stone extraction treatment. I have treated many cases of recurrence of stones or even gallbladder cancer after several months to several years after completion of biliary lithotripsy in different hospitals.
