Experience of Chinese medicine in the treatment of ulcerative colitis

The author used Chinese herbal medicine to treat ulcerative colitis to obtain better results, which are described as follows: 1. Acute stage This is the stage with the heaviest symptoms, and patients have pus and blood stools many times a day, more than 10 times in heavy cases. The treatment at this time is based on antidiarrheal and pain relief. The effectiveness of the treatment depends on whether the treatment is correct and comprehensive. Basic formula in the acute stage: 15g each of Baitou wang and Qinpi, 20g each of Pueraria lobata, 10g each of Sophora flavescens, Phellodendron spp., Ocimum sanctum, Wu Wei Zi, Chai Hu, Citrus aurantium and Yuan Hu, plus or minus with evidence. Typical case: A man, 41 years old, was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis by colonoscopy for 5 years. He came to our hospital from other hospitals for medical treatment. He had purulent blood stools 8-10 times a day, abdominal pain, fever, moderate anemia, very poor physical condition, and walking with assistance. Prescription: The above basic formula was supplemented with 10g each of Thornbush and Pomegranate Bark, 30g of Coix Seed and 20g of White Flowering Serpentine, one dose daily. At the same time, Huangliansu and oxytetracycline were added. After 20 days of continuous treatment, the condition improved significantly, with 3-4 times daily stools, still with mucus and occasionally pus and blood, and abdominal pain was reduced. Still according to this formula for 20 days, stool 2-3 times a day, no pus and blood, occasionally mucus, physical strength has turned better, has been able to work normally. From the acute stage to the extended period. 2.Migratory extension The patient has 2 to 4 times daily stools with mucus, occasionally pus and blood and abdominal pain. Most people see signs of spleen deficiency. Treatment should reduce the number of flavors and doses of heat-clearing and detoxifying drugs, and continue to use acid collection, liver relaxation, hemostatic drugs. Spleen tonics can be gradually increased according to the condition. Basic formula: 10g each of Baitou, Qin Pi, Wu Wei Zi, Sophora, Chai Hu, Citrus aurantium, 15g each of Pueraria Mirifica, Wu Mei, Atractylodes, Astragalus, 30g each of Huai Shan and Coix Seed. more bleeding plus Phellodendron, if no bleeding can remove Sophora and add Dan Pi. For mucus, add Radix et Rhizoma Polygonati. For anemia, add Fructus Lycii and Radix et Rhizoma Polygonati. For obvious Qi deficiency, add Radix Codonopsis and Poria. Still on a case as an example. After the patient turned to migratory extension, the stool condition is sometimes good and sometimes bad, occasionally mucus, pus and blood, 2 to 3 times a day. Although the physical condition has improved, there are still signs of Qi and blood deficiency. Treatment with the basic formula plus Chinese wolfberry and Radix Codonopsis, 1 dose daily for 20 days. The patient’s physical strength improved significantly after the treatment, and he had 1 to 2 stools per day without pus and blood, and occasionally with a small amount of mucus. The patient’s condition is transferred to the remission period. 3, remission period The patient is basically asymptomatic in this period, or occasionally due to improper diet and stool frequency increases, general physical strength. Most patients have given up treatment. The treatment at this time is very important, directly related to whether or not to heal. If treatment is stopped, the disease often relapses in a short period of time, making the previous work wasted. The treatment at this time is mainly to tonify the spleen and stomach, accompanied by acid collection, detoxification, draining the liver and regulating qi. The basic formula: 15g each of Radix Codonopsis, Radix Astragali and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 30g each of Chinese yam and Coix Coix Seed, 10g each of Radix Bupleurum, Ocimum sanctum, Fructus Schisandrae, Qin Pi, Radix Bupleurum and Radix et Rhizoma Polygonati. Patients can take the medicine intermittently, starting with 2 to 4 days to take l dose for 2 months. If there is basically no symptom attack after the medicine, one dose can be taken in 5-7 days, and then for more than 3 months, in order to eradicate the disease. The case cited above was cured after six months by taking the medicine according to this treatment, and no attack was seen in 1.5 years of follow-up. 4, experience ulcerative colitis cure rate is low for a number of reasons: ① acute period improper control. The period should be a combination of Chinese and Western medicines, and strive to control the symptoms in a short period of time. ② Treatment is not comprehensive. It is not enough to eliminate the inflammation with purging and detoxifying drugs alone, but should take into account the relationship between the five organs of Chinese medicine, anti-allergy, cooling the blood and stopping bleeding, strengthening the spleen and regulating qi, etc. (iii) Treatment is stopped when it is slightly effective, leading to relapse in the near future. Only with staged treatment and long-term medication is it possible to cure the disease. ④Only focus on eliminating the symptoms, without trying to change the patient’s pathological constitution such as liver depression, spleen deficiency and allergy prone, ignoring the overall pathological changes of the patient’s constitution. The medium- and long-term efficacy of such treatment is very poor. Chinese medicine has advantages in improving the physique and should focus on the overall treatment in the extended and remission period. ⑤ Inappropriate method of taking medicine. There is no need to decoct herbs daily during the remission period, and the patient cannot accept it, but the medicine should never be stopped completely during this period. It is feasible to take one dose for several days or to make Chinese medicine.
