Can you drink alcohol with diabetes?

Is it possible for diabetics to drink alcohol? This is probably a question for all diabetics. The answer is, you can drink, but it is not recommended. Because (1) the acetaldehyde produced by the metabolism of alcohol in the body will affect the metabolic function of the liver, which maintains the concentration of glucose in the blood in the body, and when the blood sugar concentration is too high, the liver will absorb the glucose in the blood and synthesize it into liver sugar for storage. So drinking alcohol that damages the liver can lead to disorders of sugar metabolism. (2) Drinking too much alcohol will hinder the pancreatic islet oxidation process, especially for diabetic patients who still maintain the habit of drinking alcohol, which will cause the slow death of pancreatic islet cells. Alcohol will paralyze the nerves and affect the normal function of insulin in several ways. This makes blood sugar more unregulated. (3) The ethanol in alcohol can affect the efficacy of many kinds of hypoglycemic drugs. The concentration of ethanol in the body is too high, take hypoglycemic drugs will have little effect, making it difficult to control blood sugar. But diabetic patients do not have to do a drop of alcohol, a small amount of alcohol will lower blood sugar, because the liver metabolizes ethanol, reducing the release of glucose from the liver, reducing the blood glucose concentration. So diabetics can drink a small amount of alcohol, but remember not to overdo it, and be sure to test your blood sugar before drinking to prevent low blood sugar from leading to shock or hypoglycemic complications.
