Diabetes can cause vesicourethral dysfunction

One of the main consequences of diabetes mellitus (DM) is autonomic neuropathy involving the lower urinary tract leading to abnormal urination. abnormal bladder function due to DM is also called diabetic neurogenic bladder. Diabetic bladder lesions are found in 27-85% of unselected DM patients on routine urodynamic examination, and the main feature of the lesion is insidious onset. The most common urodynamic manifestations include increased residual urine, impaired bladder sensation, increased bladder volume, and decreased contractility of the detrusor muscle, which may be followed by absent detrusor reflexes in advanced stages. patients with DM sometimes also exhibit hyperreflexia of the detrusor muscle and often coexist with impaired detrusor contractile function.
