It is more common that patients with metastasis in late stage of lung cancer may not survive for a long time, such as within 1-2 years. However, there are some patients with metastasis in advanced stage of lung cancer who can survive for a longer period of time, such as more than 3 years, 5 years or even a little longer. It depends on the type of lung cancer and the treatment. For example, if brain metastasis occurs in lung adenocarcinoma, if the genetic test indicates that there is a mutation, targeted therapy may be able to extend the survival period. For brain metastases, radiotherapy and gamma knife can be done to control the development of the disease. If targeted therapy is not available and only conventional radiotherapy and chemotherapy are used, most of the survival period is within 1-2 years.
