Manifestations of Stomach Yang Deficiency

Patients with stomach yang deficiency may have cold pain in the stomach, cold extremities, indigestion and loss of appetite. Stomach yang deficiency refers to the lack of yang energy to warm the stomach, which is a symptom of yang deficiency, and may be caused by dietary disorders, vegetarian yang deficiency and other factors. When stomach yang is insufficient, deficiency cold is generated within the stomach, thus manifesting as cold pain in the stomach. Stomach pain of a deficiency-cold nature may be relieved by pressure and hot compresses. The function of the stomach viscera to putrefy (initially digesting food and forming surimi) is diminished, hence loss of appetite and indigestion. Upward reversal of stomach qi (stomach qi rising instead of descending) may be manifested by acidity and vomiting. Weakness of yang qi may be manifested as lethargy (tiredness and fatigue). It can be treated with medicines that warm the stomach and disperse cold, such as Xiao Jianzhong Tang and Huang Qi Jianzhong Tang. If medication is needed, it should be used under the guidance of a doctor, and should not be used without authorization to avoid adverse consequences.
