Angioplasty focuses on reshaping the arterial vasculature and is indicated for patients with severe stenosis. Arterial stenosis is categorized into mild, moderate and severe according to angiography, and a stenosis of ≥70% is called severe stenosis. Clinical studies have found that the use of medication alone cannot prevent or stop complete occlusion of blood vessels, and complete occlusion of the cerebral blood vessels can lead to stroke. Therefore, angioplasty is needed to prevent complete occlusion. Angioplasty should also be an option if the stenosis is less than 70%, but a stroke event occurs in that vessel because of its inadequate blood supply or plaque instability.
