HPV can detect the presence or absence of human papillomavirus infection in the cervix, generally the most serious being HPV16 and HPV18. When HPV16 and HPV18 infections are present, a cervical biopsy and, if necessary, a cervical conization procedure is required to determine whether the cut edge is negative or positive and to decide whether to remove the uterus.
