What does “peroxidase for vitiligo” mean?

The established treatment options for systemic vitiligo are mainly through suppression of local and/or systemic immune responses (i.e. immunosuppression). Another therapeutic option is based on the idea of introducing substances rich in catalase activity in vitiligo patients, thus protecting melanocytes against excessive oxidative stress, rather than causing local and/or systemic immunosuppression. Catalase is a substance that is well known for its antioxidant properties. It belongs to the group of oral and topical antioxidants already listed and discussed in the previous sections. Catalase is usually derived from natural substances and it needs to be applied in combination with dermal UV radiation. Dead Sea climate therapy combined with topical topical pseudoperoxidase appears to be as effective as topical potent glucocorticoids in restoring color. Therefore, before starting any chemotherapy that can cause immunosuppression, a consultation should be held between the patient and the dermatologist on this issue, keeping in mind that the exact dosing parameters and possible side effects of these substances with peroxidase activity are not fully elucidated.
