Different treatments are chosen for ankylosing spondylitis depending on the stage. In the early and middle stages, the treatment is usually acupuncture, herbal medicine, and acupuncture. Acupuncture is mainly focused on acupuncture points on the Governor’s and Bladder meridians, such as Kidney Yu, Liver Yu, Fengmen, and Tianzhu, and acupuncture points on the Governor’s meridian, such as Fate, Lumbar Yangguan, Zhiyang, Tendon Shrinkage, and Fengfu, etc. It can even be combined with moxibustion, because many patients with ankylosing spondylitis have lumbosacral pain and fusion of the sacroiliac joints. For example, warm acupuncture for the eight pins, as well as moxibustion across the ginger and moxibustion across the saprophytic cakes can be used. In the middle and late stages, the whole spine is usually released with acupuncture, which is performed from top to bottom, from the cervical to the thoracic spine, from the lumbar spine, and even to the sacroiliac joints.
