Early detection and symptoms of laryngeal cancer

Laryngeal cancer is a relatively common malignant tumor of the head and neck in China. Its cause is not well understood, but patients mostly have a long history of smoking, and it occurs in middle-aged and elderly men. The incidence of laryngeal cancer is about 10 times more common in men than in women. The earlier laryngeal cancer is detected, the more normal laryngeal tissues can be preserved during surgery, and the impact on postoperative pronunciation, breathing and swallowing function is relatively small. Here are some early symptoms of laryngeal cancer to help self-identification. Early symptoms of laryngeal cancer: First of all, persistent hoarseness is one of the early manifestations of laryngeal cancer. Because laryngeal cancer involves the vocal folds, even if the volume is small, hoarseness will occur, so hoarseness is the earliest sign of laryngeal vocal fold cancer. Because patients do not have pain or itch at this time, they often mistakenly think it is caused by “cold” or “laryngitis”. However, the hoarseness caused by cold or inflammation will improve quickly as the inflammation subsides, while the hoarseness caused by laryngeal cancer will gradually worsen and develop into thicker and duller voice until complete loss of voice. This is one of the methods used by laymen to self-identify. Secondly, another early symptom is abnormal throat sensation, such as foreign body sensation, urgency or swallowing discomfort, which is an early symptom of supraglottic laryngeal cancer. This symptom is similar to that of chronic laryngitis and can be easily misdiagnosed as chronic pharyngitis, so this type of cancer is often detected only in the middle and late stages, which is one of the reasons why we need to see a doctor for this symptom. Furthermore, coughing with blood in sputum may also be an early sign of laryngeal cancer, because small cancerous tumors can produce an irritating dry cough and small tumor breakage can cause blood in sputum. However, blood in sputum is often a symptom of advanced tumor. Finally, sometimes, early stage laryngeal cancer on the voice box can be manifested as reflex earache and headache or pain in the throat, which is caused by laryngeal cancer combined with ulcer, inflammation or laryngeal cartilage periostitis. In this regard, doctors suggest that we should pay attention to and actively treat hoarseness caused by laryngeal diseases such as vocal cord polyps and vocal cord nodules, and if vocal cord polyps and vocal cord nodules are not well treated by non-surgical methods, they should be removed by surgery as early as possible, and those who are not suitable for surgery should be followed up regularly; some laryngeal diseases such as laryngeal mucosal leukoplakia, laryngeal papilloma, laryngeal thick skin disease, moderate to severe laryngeal mucosal atypical hyperplasia, etc. have a higher chance of becoming cancer due to malignant Some laryngeal diseases such as laryngeal leukoplakia, laryngeal papilloma, laryngeal thick skin disease and moderate to severe laryngeal mucosal atypical hyperplasia have a higher chance of becoming cancerous, also known as “pre-cancerous lesions”.
