What to do if your nipples are sore from breastfeeding

Breastfeeding nipple pain caused by different causes is handled differently, in order to facilitate treatment, first find the cause of nipple pain and treat it symptomatically. The first thing to do is to check if your nipples are broken. Most babies have incorrect sucking posture in the early stages of breastfeeding, holding the nipple without the areola, which damages the nipple. You can use hot towels on your nipples every time you breastfeed, and pay attention to holding the areola more when feeding to reduce nipple damage. For larger babies, consider that they are teething, their gums are uncomfortable, they often bite their mother’s nipples, and their nipples are broken and slow to heal. Disinfect with iodophor after each nursing session and apply a small amount of antibiotics if necessary. Let the baby suck on the healthy side of the breast first, this will reduce the sucking force and relieve the pain. If the nipple pain is obvious, you need to temporarily stop breastfeeding for 24 hours, squeeze out the milk and feed the baby with a small cup or spoon. Pay attention to hygiene, wash your hands before and after breastfeeding, wipe your breasts with warm water, wear loose underwear and cotton bras, and change them regularly. Place nipple covers if necessary to facilitate air circulation and promote healing of the nipple wound. Don’t have too much pressure. If inflammation is obvious, go to the hospital for examination in time and deal with it reasonably under the guidance of the doctor.
