Mifepristone and Misoprostol are medications that can be used in combination to terminate an embryo within 49 days of pregnancy, which has the advantage of being relatively simple and non-invasive to the woman as it does not require intrauterine manipulation. For their mechanism of action, mifepristone is an anti-progestational drug with an affinity for the endometrial progesterone receptor five times higher than the progesterone in the woman’s body, it is then able to block the activity of progesterone in the woman’s body, thus being able to terminate the pregnancy. Misoprostol has a significant contraction effect on the uterus and also dilates the cervical enclosure and softens the cervix, so it is more effective when applied together against early pregnancy.
