Treatment of allergic rhinitis mainly includes avoidance of exposure to allergens, drug therapy, immunotherapy, and Chinese herbal medicine.
However, surgery can be considered as an adjunctive treatment in the following cases: (1) Combined with sinusitis, nasal polyps and resulting nasal congestion and other symptoms continue to worsen, surgical treatment such as nasal endoscopic sinus surgery can be used to improve the symptoms.
(2) If allergy symptoms are not well controlled by repeated conservative treatment, consider destroying the sensory nerves and parasympathetic nerves in the nasal cavity and reducing the volume of nasal mucosal tissue.
(3) Obvious anatomical variants with functional abnormalities are found in the nasal cavity, such as nasal septal deviation, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, anatomical abnormalities of the sinus-oral sinus complex, etc. Submucosal correction of the nasal septum, plasma radiofrequency ablation of the inferior turbinate and nasal endoscopic surgery can be considered.
It should be noted that all treatment modalities are aimed at controlling allergy symptoms and improving the quality of life of patients. Therefore, all treatment modalities should be followed to avoid other complications caused by the treatment as much as possible.
