Can you put erythromycin eye ointment in your eyes?

Erythromycin eye ointment can be applied to the eye.
Erythromycin eye ointment is usually used for trachoma, conjunctivitis, blepharitis and infections outside the eye. It is applied to the inside of the eyelid at the time of application, with the last application preferred at bedtime. Occasional allergic reactions such as eye pain, altered vision, persistent redness or irritation have been seen in some people after use, but contraindications are unclear.
Hands should be washed before use, and care should be taken to avoid contact with other mucous membranes (e.g., mouth, nose, etc.) during use. Any burning sensation, itching, redness or swelling at the site of application should be discontinued and the topical medication should be washed off, consult a physician if necessary. The product is a white to yellow ointment, and its use is prohibited when the properties of the drug have changed.
Patients who experience eye discomfort are advised to use the drug or other treatments under the guidance of a professional doctor, and not to use the drug on their own.
