Early stage of lupus erythematosus is mainly characterized by skin symptoms, joint symptoms, kidney involvement, etc. In severe cases, it may also show symptoms of cardiovascular system, nervous system, blood system and respiratory system involvement. 1. Skin symptoms: erythema with butterfly-shaped distribution is the characteristic change of SLE; other skin damages include erythema, bruises, papules and nodules on hands and feet and around nails; conjunctivitis, scleritis and bleeding and shallow ulcers on oral mucosa may occur. 2. Joint symptoms: symmetrical joint pain and swelling, myalgia and muscle weakness can be seen in some patients. 3. Renal symptoms: acute renal insufficiency, manifested by proteinuria and hypoproteinemia. Cardiovascular system: pericarditis is the most common, endocarditis and myocarditis can also occur. 4. Nervous system: manifested by epileptic seizures, migraine, mild hemiplegia, convulsions, diplopia, retinitis and choroiditis. 5. Hematologic system: idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, anemia, neutropenia and lymphocytopenia. 6. Respiratory system: lung involvement manifests as exudative pleurisy, interstitial lung disease, acute pneumonia, pulmonary hypertension and so on.
