What are tonsils?

The tonsils are located mainly in the lateral wall of the oropharynx, the triangular depression between the palatoglossal arch and the palatopharyngeal arch, and are lymphatic organs. Tonsils can be divided into palatine, pharyngeal and lingual tonsils. When pathogenic microorganisms invade, the tonsils can produce lymphocytes and antibodies to block the invasion of microorganisms, and are the first line of defense against external infections. The center of the tonsils contains a variety of phagocytes, which can phagocytose and destroy various pathogens. At the same time, tonsils can produce a variety of cells with natural immunity and antibodies, such as T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, phagocytes and immunoglobulins, etc., which can eliminate and destroy harmful substances that invade the body from the blood, lymph or tissues. Although the tonsils belong to the immune organs, when the patient’s tonsils appear inflammation will be manifested as fever, cold, headache, sore throat, dryness and so on. The patient needs to consult a doctor in time and follow the doctor’s instructions to choose the appropriate measures for treatment.
