How is rheumatic heart disease treated?

Treatment for patients with rheumatic heart disease consists of two main areas of treatment: medication and surgery.
Patients should be treated in the acute phase of rheumatic fever before it progresses to rheumatic heart disease. Patients with a clear history of acute rheumatic fever or a confirmed diagnosis of rheumatic heart disease are best treated with antibiotic prophylaxis following medical advice to prevent a recurrence of acute rheumatic fever.
Complications such as cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure are actively prevented. Anticoagulation therapy may be administered as appropriate.
Depending on the severity of the condition, regular clinical and echocardiographic evaluation should be followed as prescribed and surgical treatment may be required if necessary.
