In the case of unexplained back pain in the thoracic spine, orthopaedic or thoracic surgery may be consulted to determine the cause. In cases of apparent thoracic trauma, emergency medicine or orthopaedics may be required. In cases of severe trauma, surgery is required to prevent the pain from worsening and leading to more serious complications.
