Can a negative ultrasound reveal uterine adhesions?

It is not always possible to see uterine adhesions with a negative ultrasound. If the patient has severe uterine adhesions, resulting in endometrial defects and a significantly reduced or distorted uterine cavity, the abnormalities can usually be seen on ultrasound. If the patient’s uterine adhesions are not severe and have no obvious effect on the shape and size of the uterus, the abnormality can usually not be seen through the ultrasound. A more accurate way to check for uterine adhesions is to use a hysteroscope. Patients with a history of uterine infections or uterine surgery who experience abnormalities such as decreased menstrual flow, or patients who find uneven changes in the ultrasound image of the uterus during ultrasound, can have a hysteroscopy done in time to determine if the patient has uterine adhesions.
