The eyes are the windows to the soul, and they are a very important way for us to understand and feel the world. But as the years go by, our “windows” will be covered with a “veil”, which is commonly known as cataracts.
The main symptom of senile cataracts is progressive blurring of vision. Geriatric cataracts are one of the major eye diseases causing blindness worldwide. Domestic epidemiology shows that 5.04% to 12.5% of blind people in Beijing are caused by cataracts; and the number of cataracts in elderly people over 60 years old is rising steeply, and 100% of elderly people over 80 years old will get cataracts.
As the standard of living continues to improve, the elderly are paying more and more attention to their quality of life, and of course, they are more concerned about the quality of their vision. How can they be prevented?
The causes of senile cataracts are not completely understood, so its prevention has been an important issue for the ophthalmology community to explore. Clinical research shows that prevention can be carried out in the following aspects: 1. Prevent the eyes from receiving long-term and large amounts of ultraviolet radiation. The longer the exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun, the greater the possibility of cataracts. Therefore, elderly people can wear UV-protective sunglasses when they go out in strong sunlight.
2, to prevent dehydration. When the human body is dehydrated, the body’s fluid metabolism is disturbed, which will produce some abnormal chemicals that will damage the lens and lead to cataracts, and for patients with existing cataracts, dehydration can aggravate the condition. Therefore, once you encounter diarrhea, vomiting and large amount of sweating caused by various reasons, you should replenish water in time, while usually you only need to drink plain water or tea.
3, strengthen nutrition, it is appropriate to consume more food rich in vitamins, trace elements, protein. For example, you can eat more vitamin-rich fruits such as apples, bananas and saints fruit, more dark green vegetables such as spinach, sea green and broccoli, and more protein-rich foods such as fish.
Diabetes is a high-risk factor for cataracts, and controlling diabetes can reduce the occurrence of cataracts.
The lens is sensitive to various kinds of ionizing radiation, such as X-rays, infrared rays and ultraviolet rays. Various chemical poisons and drugs in life can cause cataracts, such as glucocorticoids and chlorpromazine in drugs, trinitrotoluene (TNT), fluoride and various heavy metal ions in chemical agents.
In addition, we should keep our emotions comfortable and happy, quit smoking, ensure sufficient sleep, pay attention to eye hygiene and health care, and actively prevent and treat systemic chronic diseases such as diabetes.
Starting from these life points will stop and delay the development of senile cataract, so that the elderly can also enjoy a clear and beautiful life.
