Once a novel coronavirus infection is diagnosed, it must be treated in isolation at a designated hospital in a timely manner and must not be taken at home on its own. There are no specific antiviral drugs for novel coronaviruses, and those cases that have recovered rely most on the body’s own immunity to kill and clear the virus. Medical treatment is mainly for symptomatic support and prevention of complications, including: ensuring adequate nutrition, water-electrolyte balance, maintaining the stability of the body’s internal environment, and monitoring all vital signs. Antiviral treatment regimens currently in use include alpha-interferon nebulized inhalation, oral lopinavir/ritonavir, and intravenous ribavirin. For critically ill patients, the main focus is on timely admission to the ICU for respiratory and circulatory support, as well as effective control of various complications.
