What kinds of treatments are available for carotid artery stenosis

As we all know, cardiovascular diseases are a major health hazard in today’s society and pose a major potential threat to human life and safety. As a common cerebrovascular disease, carotid artery stenosis is a serious threat to the health of middle-aged and elderly people. According to statistics, about 60 or more ischemic strokes are caused by carotid stenosis, so the prevention and treatment of carotid stenosis has become an important medical task. So, what kinds of treatment methods are available for carotid stenosis? In fact, the scientific treatment of carotid stenosis requires different treatment methods according to its stenosis rate. The stenosis rate below 50% is mild carotid stenosis, which can be treated conservatively, controlled well with drugs and reviewed regularly. For moderate carotid stenosis with a stenosis rate of 50%-70% and severe carotid stenosis with a stenosis rate of 70% or more, further surgical treatment needs to be considered. The surgical treatment of carotid stenosis is divided into stent intervention and carotid endarterectomy. Although stent intervention is a minimally invasive treatment, according to clinical basic research, there are many risks during the operation, such as the occurrence of cerebral thrombosis due to plaque dislodgement, and the patient may have secondary stenosis after the operation. In contrast, carotid endarterectomy is currently recognized by the medical community as the standard procedure for treating carotid stenosis and preventing cerebral infarction. This technique has been proven in a large number of successful cases and has achieved outstanding results. The procedure removes carotid plaque under the microscope, solves the stenosis problem from the root cause, restores the size of the carotid lumen, and thus restores blood supply.
